1. Who we are
4minit is a free daily newsletter and website covering Mauritius news, regional developments, and the global headlines that matter.
For the purposes of applicable data protection laws, including the Mauritius Data Protection Act 2017 where applicable, 4minit acts as the controller of the personal data described in this policy.
2. Scope of this policy
This Privacy Policy applies to personal data collected through the 4minit website, newsletter subscription forms, unsubscribe forms, and direct communications you send to us.
It does not apply to third-party websites, platforms, or services that may be linked from our website or newsletter.
3. Personal data we collect
We aim to collect as little personal data as reasonably necessary to operate the service. Depending on how you interact with 4minit, we may collect:
- your email address when you subscribe
- subscription status information, such as whether you are subscribed or unsubscribed
- basic technical and usage data, such as browser type, device type, IP-related server log data, referring pages, and pages visited
- information you choose to include when emailing us, replying to the newsletter, or using our contact or feedback forms, such as your subject line and message
We do not intentionally request sensitive personal data, and you should not send sensitive personal data to us unless it is genuinely necessary and you are comfortable doing so.
4. How we use your personal data
We may use personal data to:
- send you the 4minit newsletter
- manage subscriptions, unsubscribes, and suppression lists
- respond to your messages, feedback, or support requests
- monitor and improve the performance, reliability, and usability of the website and newsletter
- detect, prevent, or investigate spam, abuse, fraud, security incidents, or technical issues
- comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service
5. Lawful bases for processing
Where required by applicable law, we rely on one or more lawful bases for processing personal data, including:
- consent, for example when you subscribe to receive the newsletter
- legitimate interests, such as operating, securing, analysing, and improving the website and newsletter in a proportionate way
- legal obligations, where processing is necessary to comply with applicable law
6. Email subscriptions and marketing communications
When you subscribe to 4minit, we use your email address to send the newsletter and essential service-related messages connected to your subscription.
You can unsubscribe at any time by using the unsubscribe link in an email or by visiting the unsubscribe page on this website. If you object to direct marketing, we will stop sending newsletter emails to that address, subject to retaining a minimal suppression record so we do not accidentally email you again.
7. Cookies, logs, and analytics
We may use basic server logs and lightweight analytics or measurement tools to understand website performance, page usage, newsletter growth, and service reliability.
Where cookies or similar technologies are used, they are intended to support essential site functionality, security, analytics, or user experience. We aim to keep tracking limited, proportionate, and relevant to running the service rather than building advertising profiles.
8. Sharing personal data
We do not sell your personal data.
We may share limited personal data with service providers that help us run 4minit, such as website hosting, email delivery, form handling, analytics, or security providers. These providers may process personal data only on our instructions or as otherwise permitted by law, and only to the extent reasonably necessary to provide their services to us.
We may also disclose personal data where required by law, legal process, or a valid request from a public authority, or where reasonably necessary to protect our rights, users, or the public.
9. International transfers
Some of our service providers may process data outside Mauritius. Where personal data is transferred outside Mauritius, we aim to use providers and safeguards that are appropriate for the nature of the data and the service being provided, including contractual, organisational, and technical measures where reasonably necessary.
10. Data retention
We retain personal data only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including operating the newsletter, maintaining suppression records, resolving disputes, keeping appropriate business records, and complying with legal obligations.
When personal data is no longer required, we aim to delete it, anonymise it, or securely minimise it, subject to any lawful need to retain limited records.
11. Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to help protect personal data against accidental or unlawful loss, misuse, unauthorised access, alteration, or disclosure.
No internet-based service can be guaranteed to be perfectly secure, but we aim to keep our setup lean, modern, and well maintained.
12. Your rights
Depending on the law that applies to you, you may have rights relating to your personal data, including the right to request access, rectification, erasure, restriction, to object to certain processing, to object to direct marketing, to withdraw consent where consent is the basis for processing, and not to be subject to certain decisions based solely on automated processing.
To exercise a privacy right, contact us at 4minit.mu@gmail.com. We may need to verify your identity before completing your request.
13. Children
4minit is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children in a way that would require parental authorisation under applicable law.
14. Complaints
If you have a concern about how we handle your personal data, please contact us first and we will try to address it fairly and promptly.
If you are in Mauritius, you may also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Data Protection Office or another competent authority, depending on the law that applies to you.
15. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The latest version will always be posted on this page, and the “Last updated” date at the top will show when the current version took effect.
